Solomon Northup was a FREE man. Born in New York. Educated. Married. His father had been freed and owned property.
None of it mattered. In 1841, he was kidnapped and sold into slavery for 12 years—because he was Black, and any Black person could be turned into property if no one stopped it.
Today: 9 out of 10 ICE arrests target Latinos. The Supreme Court's "Kavanaugh stops" now permit agents to weigh someone's apparent ethnicity as grounds for detention.
When "undocumented" meant Black in the 1850s, racial profiling was the engine of slave-catching.
It still is.
