“I believe Zionists are right: antisemitism is on the rise; but it’s primarily on the rise because of what Zionists are doing—and because there has been so little effort to explain clearly and distinctively what Semitism is. Rather than challenging and disparaging the racialization of Jews that is at the foundation of antisemitism, most Zionists and their supporters have enabled such a racialization by “complicating” Jewish identity; rather than accepting Jews as a religious group alongside Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and Scientologists, they insist that Jews “are something more”—something special. That something special is ancestry. They do the same thing as antisemites, but in reverse.”
