A more uncomfortable finding from the qualitative literature on Gen Z multitasking is that students do not experience the second screen as multitasking at all. They experience it as the floor of cognitive engagement, with single-screen attention feeling under-stimulated. That is a critical observation, because design decisions that assume single-screen attention as the default are now designing for a learner who does not exist.
