Are We Preserving Our Crafts or Freezing Them?

For years, we’ve been told that Indian crafts need to be preserved. We document them, display them in museums, organise exhibitions, and celebrate them as pieces of our heritage. All of this is important. But lately, I’ve started wondering whether preservation alone is enough.

A craft was never meant to live behind glass. It was meant to be worn, used, adapted, questioned, and passed on. It evolved because every generation found new ways to make it relevant to their own lives. The moment a craft stops evolving and only exists as something we admire from a distance, it begins to lose the very thing that kept it alive.

Maybe that’s why so many young people appreciate Indian crafts but rarely feel connected to them. We have become very good at protecting the past, but not as good at carrying it into the future.

Perhaps the goal isn’t just to preserve our crafts. It’s to make sure they continue living.
