Today’s story from BASS of the Century was “The Rotifer” by Mary Ladd Gavell, 1968 in Psychiatry. Gavell died in her 40s of cancer and this story and a collection of her stories were published posthumously. I loved it. It’s three stories in one, around a central metaphor introduced in the first story. Of course, my friend at A Useful Fiction complains the story doesn’t cohere, the same complaint they have about several of the stories in the volume they also painstakingly read and reported on back in 2021. It’s a wonder they didn’t begin to question their ability to comprehend stories at all. Still, they kept on! As I will keep on, checking to see what they thought of each story, locked in mental conversation with the anonymous writer of A Useful Fiction until the day I finally finish this book.
