Reading gardeners in Britain agonize over hose pipe bans reminded me of the drought we suffered in 1999 at our former rural home. A shallow (less than 30 feet/9 meters) well supplied us with all our water. Most years it was sufficient. But during a drought, it was all on us to conserve enough that our well did not go dry.
