It reminds me of reforestation in a forest long devastated. In the beginning, the state must necessarily plant the saplings, fence them, water them, and protect them from immediate harm. That initial tending is not artificial — it is catalytic. Without it, regeneration may never begin.
But no forest survives on supervision alone. In time, the deeper forces of ecology — soil, climate, biodiversity, the quiet laws of agronomy and nature — must take over. If the larger ecosystem is not conducive, no amount of careful tending can sustain it indefinitely. And if it is conducive, the forest will grow beyond the planter’s hand.
Societies function in much the same way. The state may enable a cultural resurrection, but it cannot manufacture cultural life. It can act as catalyst, not custodian of permanence. Ultimately, it is the organic forces within society that determine whether a tradition lives, thrives, or merely performs.
