I’ve thought about this a lot — I think the only way it works is if the writer gets to set the price. I’ve written two issues that have made me hit #1 on the Rising chart, and then ultimately had 2/3 of people unsubscribe within a month or two (which made me feel AWFUL) but the main point of those issues was to make some money after losing my job very unexpectedly (and writing about it), and I would have made significantly less if the issue only cost $1 instead of $6. So, I want this feature too, but I also want the flexibility to set the price on my end, and for this kind of thing I’d actually make it the same price as a monthly (without actually signing up for a subscription they don’t want.) For other issues, maybe I’d do less. But if the price was fixed at $1 always, I think the feature would seriously benefit readers, but it could actually hurt individual writers in the long run when most people sort of “pay as you go” instead of doing a subscription. It discourages the thing I like best about Substack, which is community.
