I live. I create. I consume. I create. The words that end up in my books started out in the ether, in my observations of the world, in stories that came across my screen. I transcribe those instances into plots and characters and tension and another novel is created.

I think it’s important to remember that creativity is both natural and orchestrated. What’s more important to remember is that this orchestration is available to everyone.

I know it can feel like it, but it’s important to remember that creativity is not this magical thing, it’s a process of negotiating your memory combined with your ability to express those thoughts. And when we overload our memory with passive consumption, the brain shifts from deep processing to superficial processing. In this mode of superficiality, the information we consume is not committed to long-term memory. And because our creativity is a negotiation of memory, our constant consumption literally prohibits our ability to create. As writers, it means we no longer become architects, we remain on the periphery of creativity and never fully achieve our potential.
