Narcissism is really having a moment. It's also being slowly destroyed by that moment.
I see ‘Narcissistic Personality Disorder’ being applied now to difficult exes, demanding bosses, mothers-in-law who didn't compliment the roast. It is a label/ diagnosis associated with a specific cluster of traits, a specific and SIGNIFICANT impact on functioning, and a prevalence rate of somewhere between one and five percent of the population.
That's not most people's situationship. That's not most people's LinkedIn nemesis. When we turn (any) clinical diagnosis into an insult, two things happen. We lose the precision of the language. And the people who are genuinely living with, or next to, the real problematic personality pattern stop being taken seriously.
Words are the tools. Blunting them helps no one.
