I love this and wanted to add one more thing: the biggest editorial challenge I faced as an agent and freelance editor (but also sometimes as an editor). It’s this: authors I’ve given structural edits to resubmitting a manuscript that isn’t different enough. In other words, they’ve received big picture feedback but interpreted it as tinkering. So a big part of this is being ambitious and, as Caroline mentioned, teaching yourself how to be that book mechanic - this will help you find and fix those issues but also recognize the level of editing needed if you get external feedback of any kind!
