Oh, the irony, we are able to determine how much acidification has increased because a research vessel dredged up shellfish in the 1880's and we can analyze those shells.
The simple act of dredging releases enormous amounts of CO2, which causes ocean acidification!
More bitter irony.
In the Hauraki Gulf, where I have evolved, the seabed used to be carpeted in mussels.

I've dived extensively in the Gulf and seen the carnage dredges inflict on the benthic region, now we have a Fisheries Minister, a former personal friend of mine, who slavishly wants to mine everything in sight, on land and on the seabed, despite legions of data showing its ecocide!
