“Keywords are the bricks. Topics are the blueprint.” If you only pick the right bricks, you still do not get a house.
That is the core mistake of keyword-first SEO in 2025. Teams obsess over individual queries, titles, and “ranking wins” while the site lacks a coherent shape around what it should be known for.
Topics do the heavy lifting because they frame authority. They tell search engines (and language models) what your site “is” and how your pages relate.
Keywords still matter, but as parts of a larger structure.
A fast test: If you removed 20 percent of your pages, would your site still communicate the same subject-matter authority?
If the answer is “no,” you have a keyword library, not a topic system.
Build the blueprint first. Then pick the bricks.
