When I try to explain why the activist ideologies circulating in arts academia are dangerous, I’m often dismissed as reactionary or “conservative” and people think it’s only the arts and it doesn’t impact them. But here is a concrete example of the stakes: activist ideology incubated in an arts grad program reached employees across every sector in New York State. The state bears primary responsibility for mandating the policy — but arts programs produced the activist artists who were ready and willing to give it voice.
