James Cone declared “God is Black” and white American theologians branded him a heretic.

Growing up in Jim Crow Arkansas, Cone watched white churches preach love on Sunday while sanctioning terror the rest of the week.

When colleagues insisted theology was universal, he asked: whose universality? If Jesus came for the oppressed, then in America, Jesus must be Black.
