The word “vegan” is like the word “gay”. They're both used by the communities that created the word or repurposed an already existing word, as an act of defiant camp. They're both words derided by anti-vegans and anti-gays. But there’s one exception. Gay is widely accepted, as I believe vegan will be in time. I don’t support those who say vegan is a bad word. It’s a word to be avoided. It’s a good idea, but the word drives people away. Let’s use the bland term plant-based instead, which isn’t always vegan anyway. And so on. I am proud to be gay as much as I am proud to be vegan. And no one will shut me up about either. Let’s say what we mean. I am a vegan who fights for animal rights.
