Our brains love it (or is it just mine?) when something scary turns out to be safe. When the body receives a painful stimulus, but the brain realises there is no actual threat to survival (because of consent and trust), it releases a massive burst of dopamine as a reward for navigating the intensity. This is the rush you feel when a heavy impact lands, and you realise you can handle it. It feels like a victory for the nervous system. I find all this fascinating — it explains so many of my own experiences spot on.
