While doing research for my next post, I’ve confirmed that women as young as their mid to late 40s are experiencing the double whammy of sexism and ageism in the workplace. Added to that is ‘lookism’—discrimination and bias against outer appearance, which affects older women in the workplace more than men. As women age, this bias intensifies. Men are often seen as more distinguished and attractive as they get older—the ‘George Clooney Effect’! Whereas women, in order to be seen as competent, must manage their hair, their clothes and their cosmetics, and may feel pressured to turn to cosmetic surgery. We all need to raise awareness of how women in the workplace are depicted when they are older.
