There is so much that feels heavy now. The job market is terrible, stores are closing, wars are raging, and in America, the government is turning on its own people. Many of us saw this coming, but being right is no consolation. I really wish I would’ve been wrong.
Black, brown, and native people have been trying to tell us this would happen for hundreds of years. We didn’t listen. We had to take a call for work. We had to get those numbers up; provide value for shareholders. We had to circle back.
Are we looking around yet?
Even though I am destroyed, I am hopeful. I think back to my store. I think back to the good in people. I saw how we all supported strangers. Extended a little kindness to anyone who needed it. Stood up for each other. Carried knives during social unrest - I’m kidding - retail leaders have a knife on them always.
So, if you need a dose of hope, get out to your favorite local store. They will be happy to see you. They’d love to catch up, and hear what you’re up to. Do not give up. Build your community. And yes, your retail people absolutely count.
