Canadian MPs made a commendable trip to Taiwan this week. Particular respect to Adam Chambers, Shelby-Kramp Neuman and Melissa Lantsman for continuing their visit and meeting Taiwanese officials despite pressure surrounding Ottawa-Beijing diplomacy at the moment.
It’s regrettable that other MPs felt compelled to head home early, especially while Taipei continues to endure relentless CCP coercion and pressure to limit its international relations.
Parliamentary engagement with a fellow democracy shouldn’t be something Ottawa or any other capital avoids. Canada’s One-China policy doesn’t bar MPs from visiting Taiwan—it constrains formal diplomatic recognition, not parliamentary contact. Surely Canadian officials can walk and chew gum at the same time.
