I have been put into one of my full-blown USSR rich-people hating moods today.
A totally unexpected and possibly catastrophic health emergency occurred to someone today, a person who many people know and directly depend on for services on a regular basis, and who has little resources to absorb such a blow in her life (which everyone is aware of), nor health insurance because of how much ACA premiums went up this year.
And what I watched happen is what so often does…everyone around her who themselves had the fewest resources (time, money, a car, whatever) all flew into action to help, while those with far and away the most, did not lift a finger, nor disturb themselves about it for two seconds. Those lowest on the wage scale were in immediate action mode…getting her to the ER, ensuring she went to the ER when she did not want to bc she can't afford it, arranging for her pets to be cared for and kid to be picked up, getting her vehicle moved, soliciting funds to help with cost, making sure she had a place to stay after discharge if she isn't medically allowed to be alone. All of her richest clients, who were all aware in the same way, did nothing, while the ones with the least all pitched in.
This shit happens all the time. At work it is the same group of people who always pitch in the most and volunteer time and energy and donation dollars to things, while the highest paid just pretend they didn't hear about it or it doesn't cross their mind to help. When I was on the board, I used to be privy to the amount of personal bonuses that everyone chose to discretionarily bestow upon their secretaries, and there were ENORMOUS differentials in generosity, with those who got the highest bonuses themselves often giving the stingiest and smallest ones (and this was not bc they had secretaries who did more shoddy work, since secretaries are shared and I could see how several people with the same person chose to allocate their funds). I'm not talking small differences, I'm talking huge differences…a dude who himself got a $900k bonus giving a $50 gift card as a bonus, while the person who got a $30k bonus would give $5k, differences of that level of magnitude.
This is why I get very sick of people who claim that it's always the UMC who work for the truly rich/elite who hate them most because of envy. I really don't think it is, it's because they are so often privy to precisely how out of control greedy and stingy they are.
Don't get it twisted, I am NOT saying all rich people are like this. And I know some people would say I'm rich while of course I don't think I am. Plenty of people I DO think are actually rich ARE generous and kind and non-stingy and wonderful people. But it sure as hell isn’t a majority. Nor nearly as common as such traits seem to be among the less fortunate.
A large part of how you get that rich in the first place is to never contribute a damn penny nor a expend effort you don't have to.
Sorry for the rant but this incident today severely pissed me off.
