“Dante uses a simile from the Transfiguration in the first purely positive use of the image of trees in the entire Commedia. He chooses the moment in which the three disciples see the blossoms of an apple tree which serve as a kind of heavenly manna— a moment of divine revelation in which they see the passing of the old covenant from Elijah and Moses to Jesus. There are of course also echoes of the trinity here, but the central theme is the renewal of the tree of life and the new blossoms put forth by it.”
