Thoreau is the master of sauntering, but philosophy and walking have long been entwined. Consider Aristotle’s peripatetic school or Rousseau and Nietzsche in the Alps. Kant walked too, albeit in a tamer setting. Of course, Proust’s account of Combray would be unthinkable without the walks along the Guermantes Way in his philosophical novel.
