I've been a claude code main for a while, but the most recent codex has really evened it up. For software engineering, I have been finding that codex (with 5.3 xhigh) and claude code (with 4.6) can each sometimes solve problems that the other one can't. So I have multiple versions of the repo checked out, and when there's a bug I am trying to fix, I give the same prompt to both of them.
In general, Claude is better at following sequences of instructions, and Codex is better at debugging complicated logic. But that isn't always the case, I am not always correct when I guess which one is going to do better at a problem.
