My youngest son, recently wrote a 180 word flash fiction piece featuring the Wendigo, a chilling creature from Native folklore. I’m incredibly proud of the mood he captured in so few words.
Seems only fitting to pair it with a photo of the deer that wandered up to my study window this morning, an eerie little omen, perhaps, or just the quiet watcher at the edge of the tale.

Nature's Stalker
One night, Mum and I went out of the house to check out a noise that had happened on the roof. I had brought my pocket torch so we could see in a wide area. As we leave into the muggy outdoors, we check the roof. Nothing but a raccoon who had fallen onto our roof, poor guy... We were heading inside when, I saw it... This, thing. It was a Wendigo, it had to be. It had Glowing eyes, a creepy animalistic grin, and appeared to be bipedal, but was on all fours, like it was stalking prey... and as I was just a few steps from the door, I heard it sprint towards me but when I looked. Nothing. It had vanished. Even though it sounded so close... I was shaken up when I got inside, ready to punch and run. But then, after I calmed down and analyzed in my mind, I had realized it was just a deer... and the sprinting? Acorns.. That was the time I was stalked by a deer playing Wendigo. 9/25/25
