Hundreds of pages into translating Schelling’s late lectures, and I gotta say I’m not seeing the romantic, syncretic sage others see. He’s going on at some length — and textual detail — about various paganisms, true. But it’s also clear he’s “squeezing” them for philosophical content that he thinks only Christianity truly understands. And even then, he’s after “positive philosophy,” not theology.
