I’ve seen some of these quotes, but not that one from Ayer. Yes, you will see echoes of remarks about intelligibility throughout the literature, often from the most prominent philosophers out there. I have little doubt that similar remarks were made by the countless majority who are not as prominent as Mackie and Ayer.

This is one reason why I think that, rather than get upset with people who have such a bad reaction to my claim that irreducible normativity is unintelligible, I should just scoff at them. Trying to present me as a tinfoil hat fringe idiot only works if one is (quite ironically) very ignorant of 20th century metaethics. It’d be nice to have a complete arsenal of such quotes to make this point.

I have no idea who Parfit had in mind, but I certainly see unintelligibility arguments sprinkled throughout classic metaethics.
