Have you ever had an exchange like this? Whether you have or not, what do you think of this kind of response?
Alex: What do you mean by true?
Sam: I mean what people ordinarily mean by true.
Alex: Alright, what do you think ordinary people mean by “true”?
Sam: Well, you and I are competent speakers of English, and so we both know when to call things true and when not to. I can’t give you a complete conceptual analysis of the exact application conditions of the term “true,” but I am stipulating that when I use the term “true,” I just mean what everyone else means.
Alex: I don’t need a complete conceptual analysis. A rough description would suffice.
Sam: I understand, but I can’t give you one. What I’m saying is simply that whatever it turns out that people ordinarily mean, I mean whatever that is.
What do you make of this kind of response? The claim that what one means is whatever it is ordinary people mean?
Is this an adequate answer to this question? How would you react to Sam?
