Actually I think Aaron Gwyn should give us a list of ten" “great” novelists who did not engage politically in their prose. Nabokov, are you kidding me? Dostoevsky? Chesterton isn’t on that list. Lewis isn’t. Tolkien isn’t — have you read his letters? Steinbeck? Morrison? Le Guin? Rowling?! Hemingway? Kingsolver?
Who on earth would he list to even get to 10, regardless of the politic?
I think it’s going to be impossible for us to prove a negative, but it seems to me that the exception and the rule runs the other way.
