This is the most important, defining, and courageous speech by a world leader since Trump returned to the White House. Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, has not only given a ringing defense of the rules based international order that Trump is ravaging, he has also made clear that Canada (and I think a growing number of America’s other democratic “allies”) will no longer look the other way and pretend that it isn’t happening. For the leader of Canada to invoke Vaclav Havel to insist that we must “live in truth” to address the reality of what is happening is indeed sobering. “The powerful have their power. But we have something too: the capacity to stop pretending, to name realities, to build our strength at home, and to act together.” But only this tough love will convey that the long, pleading period of denial and enabling is over, and that democracies will stand up to Donald Trump’s bullying and petulant narcisism.
Please read this speech. And thank you, Mark Carney.
