The Stone Door by Lenora Carrington twists and turns, like water, dipping in and out of obscurity. Occasionally, the prose solidifies into something you can hold onto — a sequence you can follow — only to evaporate again. It’s considered one of Carrighton’s most difficult and inaccessible texts. The Stone Door, like Carrington’s Down Below, failed to live up to my adoration of her The Hearing Trumpet. It lacked that book’s wry humor and sharp, biting edges.
