The Symphony in the Trees: Finding Focus in Birdsong
Why I traded the distraction of coffee shops for a front-row seat to nature's soundtrack.
I’ve always been a writer who craves a quiet, distraction-free sanctuary. While some find inspiration in the hum of a coffee shop, I find that my eyes often wander from the screen to the people around me, leaving my work untouched.
In my home studio, my environment is much different. For most of the year, I work with the windows open to welcome my favorite "writing soundtrack"—birdsong. The surrounding trees serve as a lively stage for a variety of neighbors, including mourning doves, red-winged blackbirds, cedar waxwings, and song sparrows. But the true stars of my writing sessions are the lesser goldfinches and house finches like the one pictured here.
What does your ideal writing environment sound like—total silence, a curated playlist, or the sounds of the natural world?
