One is an Idea, Two is a Coincidence, Three is Magic

The Simple Pattern That Makes Writing and Storytelling Unforgettable

Writers are pattern-makers, and readers are pattern-seekers.

In writing, triplets create a natural music:

  • One is an instance.

  • Two is a coincidence.

  • Three is a rhythm.

Think of "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Two beats would feel unfinished; four would feel like a list. But three? Three lands with resonance.

In storytelling, the pattern runs even deeper. Most narratives thrive on a three-act arc: the setup, the struggle, and the resolution. Characters often fail twice before the third attempt provides the breakthrough. Even a single scene is often just a trio of beats: a desire, an obstacle, and a decision.

Fairy tales have leaned on this forever: three pigs, three wishes, three trials. The first two set the expectation. The third breaks it—or fulfills it.

The Rule of Three isn't just a trick; it’s the "minimalist's masterpiece." Use it with intention, and your prose becomes more rhythmic, your plots more satisfying, and your ideas more unforgettable.

My Favorite Three?

"To me, there are three things we all should do every day... Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears... If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day." —JIM VALVANO
