THE SECRET SANCTUARY
Finding My Ultimate Summer Writing Hideaway
For me, the ultimate writing spot must offer deep focus and an escape from daily distractions—a place where I can immerse myself in my manuscript. To unlock that level of creative flow, a sanctuary must meet a few non-negotiable criteria:
Four-Legged Company Only: It must be dog-friendly so my companion, Henry, can snooze nearby. I need to be completely alone—no people, no chatter, just quiet solidarity.
Natural Orchestration: The space must be silent, except for the welcome soundtrack of nature. The gentle chirp of birds or the rhythmic crash of waves is the only background noise allowed.
Uncompromising Safety: True creative freedom requires peace of mind. Because I travel solo (my pilot husband, Len, takes these opportunities to attend fly-ins), feeling secure in my environment is essential.
Clutter-Free Clarity: The space must be pristine. A clean environment ensures my mind stays on the page rather than getting hijacked by the sudden urge to deep-clean.
A Room with a View: A sturdy writing desk must be near a window. Facing a peaceful landscape gives me something lovely to rest my eyes on while the next plot point simmers.
Self-Sustaining Solitude: I need a functional kitchen to whip up simple meals, or at least a local spot nearby where I can pick up takeout. No delivery drivers disrupting the peace, thank you very much.
The Twilight Reward: At least one plush chair is required. It must be a seat I can sink into at day’s end to lose myself in someone else’s book.
Of all the hidden retreats I've escaped to over the years, the sanctuary in this photograph remains my absolute favorite. I won't be disclosing the coordinates anytime soon—some secrets are just too good to share.
