I recently saw a post asking LA people to share the most LA thing they'd ever experienced. I live in San Luis Obispo, on California’s Central Coast, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It's where LA people come to get away from LA.
Here are some of the most Central Coast things I’ve ever experienced:
1. Running into Rich Sommer touring Hearst Castle with his family a couple of summers ago. I was with my friends Trey and Flinn. We didn't bother them, because we're chill California people, and we don't bother celebrities when they're out with their families.
Also, Trey is a writer and an actor, and I am a writer, so we respect other artists. But I was not chill on the inside, because our eyes met on the bus, Rich Sommer smiled at me, and I knew that he knew that I knew, and whenever people ask me what TV series I wish I'd written, my answer is always Mad Men.
(The movie I wish I’d written is Moonstruck, but if I ever run into Cher on the street or anywhere, I will be too DEAD to be able to tell you about it.)
2. I was walking home from work one afternoon in downtown San Luis Obispo and passed William H. Macy on the sidewalk, walking in the opposite direction. We just did the head nod thing because, again, I'm chill. So random. I wonder if he was as surprised as I was?
3. Well, this wasn't really weird or unexpected, because I bought tickets for it, but John Corbett and Bo Derek live in the next county over, and I saw Corbett's band play once at the old SLO Brew downtown. I was not exactly chill.
4. My friend Wendy Burbridge and I were going to to attend a fundraising event for San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre and walked past Brad Pitt on the sidewalk. Only we didn't even know it. Our friends saw the "meeting" take place from the SLO Rep patio and told us about it when we got inside.
I’m not sure we’d have been chill if we’d noticed, but ignorance is bliss, and being blissfully unaware means we APPEARED to be chill and didn’t make fools of ourselves. P.S. Wendy is the best and most chill person to help you reinvent your life.
5. I once worked on supermodel Kelly LeBrock's legal team. I found her to be the most down-to-earth person I'd ever met. She had her priorities straight and was more chill about her fame than some of my not-at-all-famous friends.
Over dinner one night, Kelly LeBrock advised me to dump a guy I'd been seeing for a couple of months, like we were sisters. (I did, Kelly.) And one day at court she told me my skirt was cute. So yeah, I still have that skirt even if I haven't been able to fit into it for 25 years. And BTW, we won.
