I came across this draft ordinance for my hometown that would create a statue of Rev. Jesse Jackson. The draft ordinance was written by Charles Morris.
Jesse Jackson was one of the most pivotal figures in the civil rights movement. He was there when MLK was shot and carried on his mission after he died.
As one of Greenville’s own national heroes who was born here, it is disheartening to see every other state celebrate our hero more than we do.
It’s no secret that Greenville, unfortunately and inexcusably, still celebrates Confederate traitors. It is incredibly frustrating that we still celebrate those who fought for slavery, while ignoring those who fought for civil rights.
Attached is a draft ordinance that could be used to implement a statue of Jesse Jackson. While tearing down Confederate statues has proven to be difficult at best, we may be able to find a way to remember the true heroes of the South, rather than the slavers.
