After yesterday’s article, here is a recent incident and this is exactly why de-icing is a discipline, not just a procedure.
On March 6, a United Airlines Boeing 737 started taxiing before de-icing was fully complete… and ended up striking two de-ice trucks on the pad.
No system failure. No weather surprise.
Just a breakdown in communication and confirmation.
On a de-ice pad, nothing moves until:
✔️ You’re clearly released
✔️ You’ve confirmed all vehicles are clear
✔️ Both pilots are on the same page
Miss one of those—and things escalate fast.
This is a real-world reminder:
De-icing isn’t just about clean wings. It’s about clear minds and clear communication.
