Most passengers think the yellow oxygen mask is a parachute.

It's not.

It's a clock.

Roughly 12 minutes of oxygen in that little cup above your seat. That's it.

Why 12? Because that's exactly how long the pilots need to get the airplane down to an altitude where the outside air is breathable on its own.

The mask isn't there to save you.

The dive is.
