Waiting to be noticed by your boss is a terrible career strategy. If you want to break through to the executive level, you need a systematic plan.
My solution is something I call The Magic Loop: a framework for rapid career growth. This framework helped me rise quickly in my career and has helped countless mentees and direct reports rise in theirs. It works for all levels (ICs, managers, executives) and it helps managers empower their teams.
Here are the 5 steps:
Do your current job well: You must demonstrate consistent, high performance in your existing job to build the foundation of trust and credibility needed for higher risk-taking.
Ask your manager how you can help: Proactively offering to help your manager with their hardest problems sets you apart because almost no one does it. This shows agency and ownership.
Do what they ask: Making an honest attempt at the work they ask of you, even if it’s not exactly what you were hoping for, shows willingness and hard work. You’ll be able to use this to help move your career forward in step 4!
Ask for work that advances your career: Showing you are willing to put in the work and do a good job doing so, you will be in a position where you can ask for work that helps advance your career.
Do as they suggest and repeat: Continuing to perform well and show willingness to help allows you to exponentially grow your career.
By applying this strategic action loop, you move from waiting for permission to driving outcomes. This positions yourself as the autonomous, influential leader required at the strategic level.
I have two courses that teach you how to accelerate your career growth and breakthrough.
