I can even make my peace with cheap tat; the producer knows it’s tat, the consumer knows it’s tat, the price reflects the level of tat – everyone knows where they stand. My issue is with expensive tat. These are products compromised by poor materials, questionable ingredients, unethical production, or other flaws from a long list — trussed up with clever marketing, fancy packaging, or a well-known brand name — then sold at a premium for the privilege. Expensive tat is the worst and most deceitful kind of tat Exhibit A: I was recently gifted a Diptyque candle.
