Make money doing the work you believe in

Part of the problem here is that the phrase “authentic desire” means different things to the liberal and the traditionalist. To the former, a desire is more or less authentic if it is in accord with the deeply held beliefs of a particular individual, and law should exist merely to mitigate any friction caused by competing individual desires in society. To the latter, a desire is more or less authentic in accordance with its striving for the good, true, and beautiful. Law exists to facilitate society being oriented along those lines. But it’s still inescapable that all written law is necessarily subordinated to a broader moral vision, given that both the liberal and traditionalist have some end in mind for society, pace the supposed liberal commitment to proceeduralism independent of any vision of ultimate good.
