As a therapist, the number of times clients have mentioned the inherent good that sending friends, relatives, family members, or children to therapy is never ending. When I push back on how it could lead to harm based on the assumptions being carried into it, the shock they experience never gets old. Often when I invite to imagine what a preoccupation with every thought, and the felt need to address negative thoughts as inherently a personal problem, leads to, they quickly realize why common therapy practices are awful. Taking our thoughts less seriously is one of the most freeing practices one can do.
