Call me crazy, but I’d like to be treated as a “person” instead of just a “user.” I really mean that. As a descendent of people who were not considered that, but instead treated as property, I’m deeply disgusted by the parallels this patent has to U.S. chattel slavery. The company is not seeing us as human beings with connections to other humans. It is only seeing us as sources of digital labor and profit for shareholders. The United States innovated on the model of enslavement, making it lifelong and hereditary. Meta has sadly decided to operate in this same morally bankrupt tradition. I’m disgusted by this, and we all should be.
