The episode aired in 1955, just ten years after the war; everyone watching knew exactly what a V-2 rocket was, and von Braun’s German accent left little room for doubt as to his history. It seems Americans understood, at least implicitly, that former Nazis were recruited to our space program. So, sometime between the 50s and my childhood in the 80s, this knowledge came to be treated as if it was a secret conspiracy.
