Vogue published a “capsule wardrobe essentials” list last month.

As someone who writes about shopping and style for a living, here’s how many of these I actually own:

  • loafers: 0

  • everyday sneakers: 0

  • black wool coat: 0

  • white t-shirt: 0 (I’m a spiller)

  • blue jeans: 1 pair

  • knit dress: 0

  • heeled boots: 2

  • long sleeve tee: 0

  • black leggings: 0

  • black tailored trousers: 2

  • button up shirt: 0

  • leather jacket: 1

  • flat boot: 1

  • cardigan: 0

  • cute bra for peekabo moments: 0 (i wish)

  • lace trim skirt: 0

  • layering turtleneck: 0

  • two piece suit: 0

  • minimalist earrings: a bunch!

  • trench coat: 0

  • crew neck sweater: 4

  • polo (neck) sweater: 0

  • straight black skirt: 0

  • personalised pendant: 0

  • tailored black blazer: 0

  • sweatsuit: 0 (i have 2/3 separates)

  • understated shades: 1

  • invisible underwear: a bunch

  • kitten heels: 2 (i’ve worn each once)

  • striped sweater: 2

  • statement flats (print or embellished): 0

  • luxe socks: a few

  • carryall tote: 1

  • classic belts: 2

  • watch: 0

  • silk scarf: 0

  • denim shirt: 0

  • daytime black dress: 0

  • black flat: 0

  • evening bags: 4/5 small bags that i use day and night

  • crossbody bag: 1

  • tennis jewels: 1

My first question is “how is this so long?”. That’s a longer list than what I actually own and wear? I can’t help but notice how much I hate what the majority of this list looks on me.

TLDR: if you’re reading about “capsule wardrobe”, you’re most likely being sold to.
