Amazon has just made it very easy for me to finally completely part ways with them as they informed me that the 13 year old Kindle I owe will not longer be supported and hence I will not be able to purchase any more books, starting May 20th.
While I don’t use my kindle a lot, last year I did read five books on it, including the Slow read of War and Peace with Simon Haisell.
I am proud that I have made a decent use of my Kindle —which was a gift from my colleagues when I left work place after 7 years — over the last 13 years. It was very useful when I lived in Ethiopia and new books were hard to get, plus the battery outlasted even the longest power cuts. It traveled with me to remote locations and I loved that it is light and not flashy item. Since I still have about a dozen or more unread titles on it, I guess I will keep it until it really falls apart or the battery won’t charge anymore.
While Amazon is offering me 20% off select Kindle models, I am thinking ‘why fix it if it ain’t broken’. And it is a good time to finally sever ties with this rather evil company.
Plus I have over 100 unread actual books on my book shelves.
