"Every time they go out and play it's an adventure. That's the jazz improvisation aspect. That's that element that people don't recognize, or don't know what their secret is. It's jazz, really. If I had to sum up my experiences with the Allman Brothers Band, it would be that I can't put my feet on the ground when I'm around them and still feel safe because they always keep me off balance. Even though they have been together for a long time, I still can't predict from day to day or from song to song just exactly what they might do or what is going to happen on any given number. It's like a 'Hey, how do you feel today?' kind of process. With seven of them in the band, it's really great when three or four of them are "on"—it's absolutely dangerous when five, six or all seven of them are on!" Tom Dowd 📷Kirk West
