Sparks flew immediately when Duane Allman and Eric Clapton met for the first time. “They go through the rest of the show. The show is over, then we all meet backstage and we’re talking, and I said, ‘Well, we’re going back to the studio because we have to listen to a couple of more things we were working on today.’ Duane says, ‘Can I come by?’ By the time we got to the studio, it was probably 12:30. Along with Duane came the whole goddamn band! All of a sudden there’s Eric and Duane and they’re strapping on guitars and trading licks and showing each other, ‘No, no—put it on this string—do it this way—this is how…’ And they’re swapping stories with each other while they’re playing. I said, ‘Hey, keep tape on the machine. Just keep it rolling.’ Into the morning and on into the early afternoon, they were still chopping along with each other. They had a good time, and they were talking and swapping instruments and doing all kinds of things. Two kindred spirits met.” Tom Dowd on Duane Allman and Eric Clapton
