Fifty seven years ago today, March 23, 1969, 6 musicians walked into the Gray House on Riverside Avenue in Jacksonville and played nonstop for hours. They weren’t the Allman Brothers Band quite yet (that came 3 days later when Gregg arrived).
Here’s Butch and Jaimoe on the famous Jacksonville Jam on 3/23/69 featuring all but Gregg: Jaimoe “We started to jam about seven o’clock. We must have played maybe an hour on one song. It was like—snap!—just like that. Like God said, all right, you, you, you, you. The spirits met and that was it.”
Butch Trucks “It lasted about five hours, nonstop. That was when I found God. You talk about religious experiences. That’s the first time I’d ever been turned on by playing music. I went through all the emotional changes you can go through. It was great. I said, man, this is it. This is it. I can’t stop doing this. Once you’ve had that feeling, you’ve got to keep doing it.”
