One photo. Two geniuses. A couple years later, Tom Dowd was looking at ghosts. The two best ears in the room—and neither one made it to see what they would've become. "Duane was something special – there were two of them that went within a year, Duane and King Curtis. One of the pictures that I have at home that I revere is one I popped in the studio during an Aretha session one day – here was Duane with his guitar hanging down, and they're talking to each other, and the irony of it is that a year later they were both dead. I just look at that and say, 'Boy, if the two of them were still alive today, they'd still have the world on the end of a string, they'd have just warped everybody.' But to look at them, who would ever know? There they were, intensely vital, contributing, creative people, prompt, businesslike, on the mark, no hanky panky, no problems. Artistic ego, but no artistic temperament." Tom Dowd

Duane did things with a guitar I’d never seen done before, or since
